Life has been a roller coaster for Gabriel âThe Saintâ Vega. From surviving a hellish childhood, to reuniting with his lost brother, only to hit the struggle of helping him battle his drug addiction. Boxing saved Gabrielâs life, and just when his career hits the fast track, he finally finds love with Salem; at least for a short time.
Social differences, obligations, and misguided good intentions tore Gabriel and Salem apart before they could ever really get started.
Will Gabriel be able to save his brother from the whirlpool of addiction that threatens to drag him under? Is Salem capable of breaking away from the ropes that bind her to doing whatâs expected rather than what and whom she desires? Can Gabriel convince Salem that their mutual feelings are worth fighting for, and that together, they will be able to go the distance?
PROLOGUE
As Salem drives away, Gabriel and Jason fade into the darkness. She drives and drives, as if on autopilot, until she comes to a stop at a traffic light. She realizes that her palms are sweaty from holding the steering wheel so tightly, and each tear that hits her cheeks stings as it rolls down her face. Say, what are you doing? Turn the damn car around. Go to him. Tell him how you feel. She looks up into the rearview mirror as her inner dialogue plays through her head. No, Salem! Youâre doing the right thing; you already have feelings for him, and if you continue down this road, someone is going to get hurt.
A loud honk brings her back to reality. Looking up at the traffic light, she realizes itâs now turning red for a second time. The car behind her revs its engine and pulls up next to her. âWhy donât you pay attention? You dumb bitch!â the driver yells angrily, then cuts in front of her car and runs the red light.
Sheâs still shaken from Gabrielâs dismissal of her. âPull yourself together,â she wipes the tears away. âItâs not like the two of you would ever work, anyways. He did you a favor.â
The light turns green and Salem proceeds through the intersection, managing to make it home without further incident. Sheâs greeted by Jocelyn, whoâs sitting on the couch watching an episode of Revenge. âI didnât expect you home tonight, or I wouldâve waited to watch this.â
Salem stands at the top of the stairs in silence. Sheâs disheveled; her typically creamy, porcelain skin is blotchy, and her puffy, bloodshot eyes are a dead giveaway that sheâs been crying. âWhat the hell happened?!â Jocelyn kicks the blanket off of her lap and rushes to her friendâs side.
âUgh, where do I start?â
âWhat did he do now? Iâm going to kill him,â she sneers.
Salem lets out a heavy, staggered breath as she responds, âNo Jocey, itâs not Blaine.â
Jocelyn studies her friendâs face. âThen, who? Iâm not sure if Iâm following you here.â She leads Salem over to the couch and the two of them climb under the blanket.
âI messed up, Joce,â Salem sighs, leaning her head onto Jocelynâs shoulder.
âAw⦠Say.â
âAfter I caught Blaine last night,â she takes a deep, calming breath, trying to build up the confidence to finish, âI ended up at Gabrielâs.â
âWell, I kind of figured that out when the three of you showed up here this morning.â
âIâ¦â
âWait, donât say another word.â Jocelyn dumps her side of the blanket onto Salemâs lap and scurries across the room, before disappearing into the kitchen. Salem sees the light from the refrigerator illuminating the dark kitchen, and then hears the sound of whipped cream being squirted. A moment later, Jocelyn reenters the room carrying a half gallon of ice cream in one hand and two spoons in the other. She smiles warmly, âOkay, proceed.â
The sadness on Salemâs face softens. âThanks, Jocey.â
âItâs just what the doctor ordered,â she laughs. âAnd by the look of you, you needed the sundae version, not just plain old ice cream.â
âYouâre so right.â Salem takes the container of ice cream and a look of guilt then appears on her face, âYeah, well, I wasnât so strong last night.â
âDid you sleep with him?â Jocelyn doesnât waste any time.
Salemâs lip begins to quiver and the tears begin to flow as she nods her head, âI made a mistake.â
âA mistake?â Jocelyn blurts out. âI donât think so, Say. I saw the way the two of you looked at each other. As far as
Iâm concerned, the only mistake you made yesterday was not dumpingâ¦â
âJoce.â
âI know you donât wanna hear it, but Iâm going to say it, anyway.â
Salem laughs through her tears, knowing full well her best friend is going to speak her mind. âOf course you are.â
âLook, we both know Iâm not a fan of Blaineâs. Actually, I despise the man. Heâs a fucking scumbag and Iâm not sure why you canât see it.â
The two friends get quiet and Salem begins to eat the ice cream.
âDo you think you donât deserve to be happy?â Jocelyn breaks their silence, scooping a heaping spoonful of whipped cream.
âI can be happy with Blaine.â
Jocelyn shoots her friend a look. âAre you happy right now?â
âNo,â she lets out an exasperated breath, âbut, I can get us back to where we once were. I know I can.â
âWhy?â
âWhy, what?â
âWhy do you want him? Help me understand.â
âIâm not sure you will understand. Youâve never hadâ¦â Salem stops herself.
âNever had, what?â
âJocelyn,â she sighs, âyouâve never been in a serious relationship.â
âYouâre absolutely right, and do you know why?â
Salem shakes her head.
âBecause, I havenât met a man worthy of me and Iâm not going to settle, like you have.â Jocelyn sees the wounded look on her friendâs face and immediately regrets what sheâs just said. âIâm sorry, Say. I donât mean to hurt your feelings, but itâs the truth. Iâve sat around and watched my best friend being treated like a doormat for years. I know exactly what not to look for; and as for you, youâd rather settle for someone who treats you like shit than to be alone.â
âThatâs notâ¦â
âNo, itâs my turn. Iâm going to tell you how I see it. I think you felt something last night with Gabriel.â Jocelyn studies her friendâs face, hoping to get a glimpse of something. âAll these years, youâve gone through the motions of being the good girlfriend; thinking that would be enough, that he would change. Yet, here we sit.â
âYouâve got it all wrong, Jocey.â
âDo I? Would you like me to remind you of all the nights Iâve lain next to you, while youâve cried yourself to sleep because that asshole stood you up? Or how about the time he showed up drunk and reeking of another womanâs perfume?â
Salemâs shoulders sink down. âHe doesnât want me,â her voice is all of a whisper.
âWho doesnât want you?â
âGabriel. He said what happened last night canât happen again and he pushed me away.â
âAnd let me guess; you being you, just walked away?â
âWhat was I supposed to do?â
âGeez, I donât know⦠stay and fight?â
âStay and fight for what, a man who doesnât want me?â
âOh, I donât think itâs a matter of him not wanting you, Say. I think itâs more like the fact he knows youâll probably end up breaking his heart.â
âThatâs just it. I told him the first night we went out that I wasnât what he needed. I think he sees that now.â
âAnd now your feelings are hurt by this?â
âIt would never work, anyways. We come from two different worlds,â Salem tries to brush it off.
âSo, what difference does that make?â
âOh yeah, sure, can you see him at one of my parentsâ dinner parties?â
âYeah, actually I can. And heâd probably liven it up a little!â Jocelyn laughs.
âYouâre not helping.â
âIâm not sure what you want me to help you with. Iâm certainly not Team Blaine, and Iâm not going to sit by and let
him continue to treat you the way he does. Whatâs got you so scared?â
âThe future.â
âThe future?!â Jocelyn exclaims. âDonât you think you may be jumping the gun a little here?â
âJocey, Iâm graduating next spring. The next step in my plan is marriage, then a house, and then kids.â
âScrew your plans, Say. Why do you need a damn plan, anyways? Youâre young, beautiful, and youâre going to be one hell of a lawyer. This is the time you should be out experiencing life. You have your whole life to worry about getting married and having babies.â
âBut, itâs what Iâm supposed to do.â
âSays who, your parents?â
âItâs what Iâve dreamed about since I was a kid.â
âSalem, when are you going to realize itâs not your dream?â Jocelyn repositions herself on the couch so that sheâs directly facing Salem. âThis life youâre living, is your parentsâ dream. You need to wake up and be your own damn person, not the person your parents have molded you into or who Blaine wants you to be. Whereâs that girl I once knew? The one who snuck out of boarding school with me and went to college frat parties. Whereâs the girl who got wasted on cheap beer and sang karaoke all night long with me?â
âI am my own person, and âthat girlâ is still right here,â Salem insists.
âTell me one major decision youâve made on your own lately.â
Salem sits quietly.
âYou canât think of one, can you?â
âActually, I can,â she bites back.
âBullshit,â Jocelyn purses her lips together.
âIâm not going into corporate law,â Salem spits out.
âExcuse me?â
âYou heard me. Iâm not going into corporate law. Iâve decided to be a guardian ad litem instead.â
A glowing smile spreads across Jocelynâs face. âHoly shit, Say! Iâm so proud of you.â
Salem tries to hide her smile, but it finally shines through.
âYour parents are gonna shit a brick,â Jocelyn laughs.
âI know.â
âWhen do you plan on dropping that bomb on them?â
âAfter graduation,â Salem says slyly.
âOh, to be a fly on the wall when your father hears this.â
âYou and Gabriel are the only people who know.â
âYou told Gabriel before you told your best friend?â
âI feel comfortable with him.â
âClearly, since you gave it up to him,â she nudges Salemâs shoulder.
Salemâs hands cover her face in embarrassment.
âHow was he?â
âIâm not like you, Jocey. I donât kiss and tell.â
âIâm not asking you to tell me how he kisses. I want to know how he is in bed.â
âNo way,â Salem replies adamantly.
Not caring about the objection in her friendâs voice, Jocelyn continues on. âIs he strong? Did he go all âDomâ on you like the guys in some of my trashy romance novels? Is he big? I bet heâs big!â
Salem remains tight-lipped. âIâm not telling you, Jocelyn.â
âCome on, give me a little something? Okay, fine,â she relents on the more risqué questions, âjust tell me if heâs a good kisser then.â
The corners of Salemâs lips turn up as a smile appears and she hugs her knees.
âIâll take that as a âyes,ââ Jocelyn chuckles and keeps on going with her interrogation. âHow are his hands, are they rough and callused from fighting?â
âSurprisingly no, theyâre very soft and his touch is gentle.â
âGentle?â Jocelynâs face scrunches up. âHmmm⦠I wouldnât have figured him for gentle.â
âMe either,â Salem utters.
âYou okay, Say?â
âYeah, Iâm fine. Itâs justâ¦â
âItâs just, what?â
Salemâs face turns a light shade of pink. âI canât,â she laughs, embarrassed.
âLook, if you canât tell me, who can you tell?â
Finally, Salem gives in to her friendâs coercion. âHe made me feel so wanted, like I was the only woman in the world.
And the way he looks at meâ¦â
Salemâs heart instantly drops into her stomach at the thought of Gabrielâs eyes on her; how his hands danced over her skin, how his soft lips grazed her neck, then her breasts, and finally down between her legs. Closing her eyes, she tries to shake her arousal and regain her composure. If Jocelyn catches wind of it, sheâll never leave her alone. The questions will go on all night long.
âUm, if Iâm not mistaken, thatâs how your man is supposed to make you feel,â Jocelyn mocks.
âYeah, well, Iâve never felt that way with Blaine.â
âWell, thatâs because Blaine is a douche and wouldnât know a good woman if she bit him in the ass. And donât you dare bite him in the ass!â
âYou donât have to worry about that.â Salem shoots Jocelyn a look, and they both begin to laugh uncontrollably.
âThanks, Jocey,â Salem snuggles up to her best friend, âyou always know how to make me feel better.â
âSay, I donât want to be that person.â
Salem is taken aback by what she just heard and her head jerks away from Jocelyn. âWhat?â
âOh Say, I didnât mean it like that,â she frowns. âWhat I meant was, I want you to have a man in your life that can comfort you and make you laugh, like I can, not one that makes you cry.â
âOh, okay,â Salem sighs in relief. âI thoughtâ¦â
âDonât you dare even say it! Youâre stuck with me, Say.â
âGood, because I donât want you going anywhere.â
As Salem drives away, Gabriel and Jason fade into the darkness. She drives and drives, as if on autopilot, until she comes to a stop at a traffic light. Born and raised in New England, Christa is a married mother of three. She began writing her first book, Broken, in October 2012, as a love story to her husband, Frank. During the writing process, Christa managed to keep her book a secret from the majority of her family and friends, including her mother. She finally revealed that she had written a book on her personal Facebook page just two weeks before Broken was released.
Broken was released in February 2013, and within twenty-four hours of its release, it was on Amazon's Movers and Shakers list as well as in the Top 20 Erotica. Christa released her second novel, On the Ropes - Book One in the Down for the Count series, in February 2014. On the Ropes has also climbed the charts on Amazon, hitting the Top 10 Sports Fiction and the Top 20 Romance Sports Fiction lists. Book Two, Going the Distance, is slated to be released in the summer of 2014.
Christa also has several other novels in the works, with no release dates announced at this time.
HOSTED BY:
Going the Distance we see a growth in these characters and I am so
very proud of them and Christa. We are taken on a roller coaster of
emotions and highs and lows and some things we never expected would
happen. Christa sure knows how deliver a emotionally captivating whirlwind romance story and I loved every second. Could not put it down.
Gabriel goes through a lot mentally in this book and Salem is there
for him, these two have such touching and amusing moments. Salem also
goes through a lot physically, mentally and emotionally and Gabriel is
always there for her and I love them both to pieces and love them separately for many differen`t reasons. Amazing book period.
When shit goes down with Blaine, it just shows what a slimeball he
truly is. You feel bad for him for a second then realize why you
dislike him so. The entire time I was rooting for Gabriel to kick his a$$. Really disliked the douche. But he was the spice to the story. I loved Gabriel finally telling and giving him what he
deserved.
There are sad moments, and many happy moments, but everything happens for a reason
and there is a deep message in this book and it speaks to you in ways you never thought possible. And the characters I adore and I think Christa captures that impeccably. It was a perfect ending to a perfect story. You must read to see how Gabriel and Salem`s story ends.
âI wanna win it for you, Say. To prove to you, that Iâm a champion and
that Iâm good enough for you.â
âUnless youâre showing me Blaineâs dead body, Iâm not interested,â
